Hammock - Chasing After Shadows... Living With The Ghosts & James Blackshaw - All Is Falling

你若鍾情於絕美出塵而難以言說的後搖滾，一年大概都在等一張專輯。

對我來說2010年的「這張專輯」是納許維爾雙人組Hammock的《Chasing After Shadows... Living With The Ghosts》。Hammock與Sigur Rós主唱Jónsi和男友合組的Riceboy Sleeps極有淵源，曾於Riceboy Sleeps展覽現場表演，前一張專輯《Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow》也由Riceboy Sleeps繪製封面。

雖然某些曲子融入歌聲，然與過去的Jónsi相似，唱歌的目的只為了帶出一段旋律，而非呈現詞句，多數的詞其實難以識別。柔情的弦樂，迷濛的音色與透明的質感，隨處可見Slowdive、Explosions In The Sky、早期的Giardini di Mirò甚至溫柔時光的Mogwai等前輩樂團的手痕。若想逃開俗世，奔向一整片天空、原野或海洋，今年有Hammock同在。

年輕的倫敦吉他好手James Blackshaw玩著難以「一言以蔽之」的音樂 -- 中世紀民謠、20世紀極限樂曲、後搖滾、新古典或實驗音樂？其實他兼容各家精髓，理出一套適合自己的遊戲法則。新專輯《All Is Falling》八首曲子的歌名以數字排列，除了十二弦空心吉他，這回也加上電吉他爆炸與鋼琴敲擊，近十二分鐘的第七曲先由小提琴提味，接著就一路顛沛流離，纏繞開展下去。

從小在郊外長大，眼睛看到的景色都是大片山丘與星空，Hammock 的樂曲很廣闊有空間感，是我們對這個樂團的第一印象。訪問過後，發現 Hammock 的文字非常哲學，思考邏輯、說話方式很緩很柔，竟然跟他們音樂如此相似。也許是這點吸引Jonsi，他與男友 Alex 發行專輯 Riceboy Sleeps 時邀請 Hammock 表演，這也是他們第一次以 Hammock 這個名字演出。

他們的溫暖，他們的情感來自生活。在訪問裡他們談到親友離世，新專輯《Departure Songs》變成他們重新整理與面對失去的一種方式。

除了Hammock，我們也邀到Hammock資深歌迷阿 Band（Putssound創辦人），一起聊聊這個他喜歡超過十年的樂團。

1.Hammock (2005)- Kenotic (Full Album)

Kenotic is the debut album of the American post-rock band Hammock. It was released in March 2005 by Hammock Music. Reception of the record was generally positive, and cemented their musical reputation before their Stranded Under Endless Sky EP released later that year.
"Through a Glass Darkly", "Winter Light", and "The Silence" are all based on Ingmar Bergman movie titles. The track "You May Emerge From This More Dead Than Alive" comes from the dialog of Winter Light.

夜半三點，指間的香菸燃燒著，音響內傳出輕柔的歌聲，隨著煙霧瀰漫在空氣之中，是來自美國田納西，由Marc Byrd以及Andrew Thompson所組成Hammock，在Debut專輯之前，兩人並未想過要組成Hammock，直到他們累積了為數可觀的創作之後，才在04正式發行「Kenotic」。

然而在06年的「Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo」內，Hammock聰明的使用著空間感，將shoegaze、dream pop、ambient等多種風味巧妙的穿插其中，Pitchfork也給了7.6分的佳績，同名主打歌「Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo」劃破了薄霧般的寧靜，輕聲吟唱的vocal將思緒拋向湛藍的天際，底層規律運作的鼓聲，宛如引擎般的穩固，維持了續航力，然而Hammock雖遨遊於容易迷失方向的太空中，卻用著撩人心弦的空靈吉他引導著專輯方向。

沒有像Explosions in the Sky強勢的爆炸橋段, Hammock的吉他聲線反倒多了股閒雲野鶴般的慵懶，飄盪在空間之中，乍聽之下「Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo」似乎是延續著合輯「Sleep-Over, Vol. 1」中ambient骨幹，但卻在「The House Where We Grew Up」以及「Floating Away in Every Direction」中聽到shoegaze的血液在流竄。

而Hammock不似Eluvium那般的典雅細緻、或是Sigur Rós的超然脫俗，反是在虛無飄渺之中多了點屬於自己的強悍。
